SIJ Metal Ravne doo – Comprehensive energy audit

Comprehensive energy audit of heating systems and potential for utilizing excess heat in the company SIJ Metal Ravne d. o. o. and cooperation in preparing an energy strategy in the company SIJ Metal Ravne d. o. o. in the field of heating buildings and utilizing excess heat for the period 2024 – 2030.

Project implementation period
September 2023 – April 2024
10 %
Achieved 10% reduction in heat consumption through organizational measures already in the heating season during the project implementation.
6 months
The payback period of the energy audit was less than half a year solely due to energy savings.
25 %
Potential for reducing heat consumption for heating by implementing two key projects, a central control and regulation system and an energy information system for this part only.
2,3 GWh
2.3 GWh or more than 200,000 EUR - a realistic possibility of long-term savings on an annual basis by using excess heat.

CHALLENGE:

Reduce the existing heat consumption for space heating by at least 10% through organizational measures and, in accordance with the company’s energy and environmental policy, obtain technical basis for a gradual transition to self-supply of heat for heating buildings, mostly produced with industrial waste heat.

Solution:

It is the implementation of a comprehensive energy audit of the heating sector and heat sources in processes. The project was based on the transfer and inclusion of all heating system measurements (> 30 measurements) into the ENIS information system, where, based on the history of data and external conditions, appropriate KPIs for heating were built and ambitious goals were set in accordance with the project challenge. Through a detailed analysis of measurements, an overview of the types and methods of heating regulation, measurements of maintained temperatures in the rooms, and analyses of the layout of workplaces and conditions, numerous possibilities for increasing energy efficiency were identified without significant impacts on comfort in the rooms. The great interest of the management of SIJ Metal Ravne in achieving the project’s effects and excellent professional support also enabled the implementation of numerous measures in practice, which resulted in annual savings of more than EUR 60,000 in the first heating season.

Graphical displays

The appropriate project concept, the professional knowledge of the contractor and client, and the high level of activity of all participants justified the investment in implementation and reduced heating costs by more than EUR 60,000 in the first year.

Emphasis

The energy audit of the heating system showed three main options for improving energy efficiency, namely:

  • Upgrading the existing energy management system in the manner demonstrated during the project.
  • In parallel with the activities that determine the upgrade of the energy management system, the next logical step is the construction of a central heating control and regulation system.
  • The third step in optimizing heat consumption for heating is related to the use of industrial waste heat from technological processes.

The appropriate project concept, the professional knowledge of the contractor and client, and the high level of activity of all participants justified the investment in implementation and reduced heating costs by more than EUR 60,000 in the first year.

“We were very satisfied with the energy audit, as it is a good basis for preparing energy efficiency projects for the heating system, as well as the basis for the energy strategy for developing the heating system in the company – the transition to the highest possible use of excess heat generated during our production processes. I would like to emphasize the high level of engagement of the contractor and his expertise in this field.”
